Ambassade de France
Behind the discreet walls of diplomacy, some details often go unnoticed by the public eye. Yet these details frequently tell the most compelling stories. On the elegant Anna Paulownastraat in The Hague, the Residence of the French Embassy stands as a place where history, architecture and national representation converge.
Located at Anna Paulownastraat 76, 2518 BJ The Hague, this distinguished address hosts the reception spaces of the French Embassy in the Netherlands. The building bears the architectural signature of A. J. van Eck, whose work reflects the structuralist and expressionist traditions of the architectural movement known as the Hague School. Bold volumes and deliberate lines define the space, requiring every contemporary intervention to respect and converse with its heritage.
It was within this demanding architectural context that the design lighting brand ARPEL was entrusted with a unique mission. For the company’s teams, being selected for such a project represents far more than a technical achievement—it is both an honor and a responsibility. Contributing to the lighting of a place where diplomats, artists and representatives of the French state gather is a rare privilege.
ARPEL’s engineering and design department developed a custom chandelier specifically for the project: a distinctive rectangular piece conceived in harmony with A. J. van Eck’s architectural language. The chandelier is composed of 16 “U”-shaped modules, carefully arranged within a balanced geometric structure and finished in satin white.
The result is a luminaire that does not dominate the space but rather engages in a dialogue with it. Suspended at the heart of the reception rooms, it blends seamlessly among the architectural lines and the surrounding artworks. The light becomes a subtle yet essential element of the setting—welcoming guests, enhancing volumes and revealing the atmosphere of the place.
For ARPEL, this project goes beyond the creation of a design lighting fixture. It represents the opportunity to illuminate a place of French state representation and to accompany the cultural, diplomatic and artistic encounters that take place within its walls. A source of pride shared by all the teams who contributed to bringing this unique chandelier to life.
